Halide 2024
Each December, MBI’s student journalism practicum releases a new volume of Halide, a book of long-form journalism articles and vibrant photography. The practicum is advised by Professor Matt Snyder of the Communication department, who also teaches classes on photojournalism and various areas of design. Each year, Halide’s team is different, as it gathers together souls who are passionate about seeing others, proclaiming their stories, and heralding the work that God is doing.
Halide’s mission statement proclaims: “Missional journalism speaks the truth in word and image, bearing witness to the stories of people in a universe created by a holy God who humbled Himself to a virgin’s womb, to Adam’s flesh, to the curse of the cross. It points to the Light of the World whose sweat and tears salted the earth and whose blood purchased our redemption. As light produces vivid colors and tones in reaction with silver halide--a salt compound found in photographic film--so the radiance of Christ penetrates the darkroom of the world, intersecting the broad spectrum of human experience and throwing Him into sharp relief against a landscape of sin and death. In Halide, we explore the salt-and-light process of preserving goodness, presenting truth, and proclaiming beauty through journalistic storycraft--for we know that our Redeemer lives.”
The most recent edition of Halide contains two issues. The first is titled, “A, B, See: Casting a Light on Literacy,” and it highlights unique stories and insights into often overlooked aspects of education. The second issue, titled “In One Accord: the Pursuit of Unity,” opens a window into various stories of connection, church, and community in both likely and unlikely spaces. “Journalism is a space that Christians need to be involved in,” said Ruth Case, editor-in-chief of Halide. She continued, “Telling stories is one of the main ways to dignify people and give them a voice.”
