Karyn Hecht
Professor of Communications | Writing and Literature
Before Professor Karyn Hecht accepted the teaching job at Moody, she earned a B.A. in English from Houghton College, NY, and an M.A. in Communications from Wheaton Graduate School, IL. After graduation, she claimed that she would never do the following: teach, work for a newspaper, or commute into a city by train like her father did for 40 years. The Lord had other plans.
In January 1987, she said ‘yes’ to teaching writing classes at Moody.
Professor Hecht lives in the Chicago suburbs, so she has commuted by train for all of these years! She was blessed to be the faculty adviser to the Moody Student newspaper for 14 years. The staff each year became like family—learning a lot together. Professor Hecht also enjoyed theatre and co-directed a variety of plays. She directed the first full-length drama at Moody: Our Town.
Eventually, Professor Hecht taught courses like American Literature, Introduction to Print Media, News Writing, Editing for Publication, and Listening for God in Fiction. She currently teaches College Writing and Research Writing, as well as Editing and Listening for God in Fiction.
Professor Hecht was privileged to receive the 2012 Alumni Faculty Citation Award. She is grateful for the many ways that the Lord has blessed her in getting to know and being known by so many students over 70+ semesters!
